Outcome
A signal transmitted over different frequencies with six pictograms. Some assumptions had to be made, and I think that was the point of this project. As visual communicators we are responsible for considering context, form, and checking our assumptions.
I decided to rely on shapes, direction, and the sum of parts that create wholes to echo the foundation of our universe, and assumed that if Keplarians were able to receive the transmitted message, then they likely have a good understanding of wave forms and physics.
KEPLARIANS
Create pictograms that communicate a human process to Keplarians—aliens from a far far away planet. Try to not make any assumptions about their knowledge base.
With these pictograms, create a two part ("two-sided") message that can be understood by both humans and Keplarians.
I tried to approach this brief from a place of curiosity, but in doing so I created a situation in which assumptions were all I had because I had no answers. Do Keplarians have an understanding of math, physics, geometry? Do they know we exist?
Instead, I retreated to something fundamental to our human existence and that I understood well—mitosis (cell division).
